It might be February, but unseasonably warm weather has the big Smallmouth Bass on the move and feeding in the French Broad River. The water temperature on the section of the river I was fishing was up to 51 degrees. Like the last several weeks I have been catching more fish when they have been generating 4000 cfs at the dam. The fish pictured above were both over 20 in. and weighed 4 lb. 12 oz. and 4 lb. 5 oz. These trophies were safely released back into the French Broad River along with another 20 smallies that were caught in about six hours of fishing. The majority of those fish were between 15 and 19 in. The best fishing is yet to come as we prepare for the annual prespawn movement of fish from the French Broad into the Little Pigeon River.
