Starting at the beginning of May and running thru the end of October 2023 I will be guiding for river smallies in Wisconsin. The rivers you will fish include the Chippewa, Flambeau, and Jump near Lake Holcombe in Rusk County. Another beautiful fall day with light winds switching to the east in the afternoon. It “felt” like a “cold front condition day” even though the high was a warm 68. Many of the fish were hitting short. Unfortunately, that resulted in several fish getting off during the fight. With that said we still caught twenty-six smallies and two walleyes. Most of the fish were in the fifteen to sixteen inch range. I did manage to catch a smallie that was 18 ¾” long and weighed 3 lbs. 7 oz. The fall migration is definitely under way but as far as I can tell it is in its early stages.
