I had a rare day on the water when I got a chance to fish with my wife for a few hours. The Little Pigeon River is still running high but was fishable enough for us to scratch out a few smallies. The warm temperatures last week did raise the water temperatures into the mid-fifties. The fish we caught were definitely French Broad smallies so the pre-spawn run is underway. Cindy caught the majority of the fish. A picture a beautifully barred-up seventeen inch smallie she caught is included in this report. This is my favorite time of the year to guide for smallies in the French Broad and Little Pigeon Rivers. The fishing should ramp up over the next several weeks depending on weather and water conditions.
