After a week of great pre-spawn smallmouth bass fishing on the Little Pigeon River I shifted my focus to the French Broad. For some odd reason my fishing spots that typically fish well on the French Broad during this pre-spawn period have been relatively quiet. Historically when the fish are hitting well on the Little Pigeon the French Broad smallies are doing the same. But every year is different and the French Broad pre-spawn fish have essentially been no-shows. At least in the areas that I typically fish. However, today that changed and I caught several nice fish including a hefty 20 in. 4 lb. 1 oz. smallie. I hope this trend continues because some of the biggest smallmouth I have caught over the years have been on the French Broad during the month of April.
