After an unforseen hiatus from fishing for a few days I returned to find that the smallmouth fishing on the French Broad River has gotten even better. One of my favorite spots to fish that really has not produced all spring finally became active. The size of the fish were all over the board with a few fish over 20 in. The water temperature in the Little Pigeon was 75 degrees while the temperature in the French Broad ranged from the high 50’s to low 60’s depending on the generation schedule. I did manage to catch 32 bass today with several largemouths thrown in for good measure. Many of the larger female smallmouth that I caught are misssing those bulging egg-laden bellies and appear to have spawned.
