The prespawn smallie run is in full swing and the fish were on fire today. I had the pleasure of taking Greg and his nephew Charlie out on the Little Pigeon River to enjoy what this outstanding fishery has to deliver during this time of the year. Today is Greg’s birthday and the smallies were kind enough to present him with a gift of an outstanding day on the water. Right out of the gate they began catching fish and the action was nonstop during the entire trip. The two anglers ended up catching forty-eight hard fighting river smallies. They were quality sized fish with the majority between fifteen and nineteen and half inches long. The picture included in this report is of Charlie holding up one of those beautifully “barred up” smallies that they couldn’t seem to keep off the hook today. This is the first day where I have seen significant numbers of prespawn fish moving up the river and I would anticipate that the fishing will continue to ramp up in the coming days and weeks.
