The river smallies are still on fire as the prespawn migration continues on the Little Pigeon River. I had the pleasure of guiding Ben and his 11 yr. old son Miles. This is my third guide trip with them in as many years, but we have not been able to schedule one during the peak of the smallie migration. If there was a perfect day for fishing this would be the day. It was cloudy with little to no wind with a high in the low 70’s. The Little Pigeon was stained with a water temperature that had risen to sixty-five degrees. The fishing I had yesterday with my friends from Missouri was just as good today. By the end of the 5 ½ hr. trip this father and son fishing duo from Asheville, NC had caught 42 smallies and 1 largemouth. Both anglers caught several fish over eighteen inches. Miles also caught a kicker 25″ channel catfish. Ben caught a “Citation Smallmouth” that was measured at an even 20″ and weighed 3 lbs. 13 oz. A picture of that hefty smallie is included in this report. Not to my surprise they have already booked a trip for April 2023.
