I had a great 4 hour trip with Derek from West Virginia today. TVA generated heavily at Douglas Dam with an average of 19000 cfs. The Little Pigeon continued to slowly drop from last week’s heavy rain. It was a beautiful sunny day with a high in the low 80’s and light winds. Derek has experience as a tournament fisherman and has fished a variety of bodies of water in the southeastern U.S. He caught a total of 13 smallies today that were of various sizes. Derek’s largest smallmouth to date was 3 lb. 11 oz. He would blow that personal record out of the water on this trip. He skillfully landed a tank of a smallmouth that was 21″ long that tipped the scales at 5 lbs. 4 oz. A picture of him proudly hoisting that impressive smallmouth for a few quick pics is included in this report. It also was a real pleasure to watch him gently release that giant back into the waters of the French Broad River to potentially to be caught in the future by a fellow angler. He also caught another dandy smallie that was 19 ¾” long that weighed 3lb. 8 oz. Derek is a highly skilled angler and it was a real thrill to see him enjoying himself catching those hard fighting East Tennessee river smallies.
