Returned to Melton Hill Dam for some more striper fishing. It was a nice cloudy day and my hope was that the cloud cover would improve the bite. When I got to the dam to drift live gizzard shad I was the only boat there which is a rare occurrence this time of year. On my first three drifts I caught two stripers and it was looking like it was going to be one of those good days on the river. I knew I wouldn’t be alone for long when a couple of boats showed up and instead powering down and idling their motors and swinging wide of the area where the stripers typically set up below the dam they ran right over the fish with their boats on plane. As you might imagine in that clear water and it only being twelve feet deep that put an end to the striper bite. It’s all part of the fishing experience directly below the dam.
