Jennifer contacted me from the Chicagoland area and was coordinating a guided fishing trip for her father (Al) and her two uncles Mike and Rich. All three worked for or are retired from the fire department. The smallie fishing has been in a holding pattern for the past several trips. The majority of the fish have been in heavy cover in or near laydowns along the bank. The numbers in my opinion are still low, but of course that is relative. I have had many anglers who have been tickled pink to catch 5-10 smallies in a four hour trip. Especially those who come from parts of the country that don’t have any smallies in their home waters. I have to remind myself that it is not April where the average trip with a couple of anglers produces around 35 fish. Today would be no different with the three anglers catching seven smalliies and a white bass. Five of the seven smallies were between 14 1/2 and 19 1/2 in. Mike caught that 19 1/2 in. fish.  A picture of Mike holding that dandy smallmouth is included in this report. You couldn’t find a bunch of nicer guys to take on a guided fishing trip. They were a lot of fun to have in the boat and I hope I get the opportunity to get them back on the water in the future.
