I had the pleasure of taking Frank and his daughter’s boyfriend Clay out for a few hours of fishing on the French Broad today. They are from central Texas and have spent the last week on vacation in Sevierville. Neither angler had caught a smallmouth before so my goal was to get them hooked up and experience the tremendous fight that this fish is well known for. It was going to be a challenge today because a cold front had moved through overnight and Douglas Dam was generating at 18,000 cfs. Both anglers fished hard during the four hour trip and managed to scratch out five smallies. Frank caught the largest fish which measured seventeen inches. The picture of Frank with his nice smallie is included in this report. Over the past several weeks my clients have been catching a mixed bag of fish that include hybrids, white bass, catfish, and of course smallies. Today was odd in that all they brought to the boat was smallies. No complaints from this smallmouth guide. I just hoped that the numbers of fish would have been greater. Frank and Clay were a couple of great guys to have in the boat. I was happy that they got to experience the smallie’s strength and tenacity on a day when their fighting abilities were boosted by the strong current from Douglas Dam.
